FAQs

If I register for IFS, do I still need to attend Summer Orientation?

Yes. Attending Summer Orientation will allow you to set up your e-mail account, obtain your University ID, take placement and credit tests, meet with an advisor, as well as register for fall classes. You are encouraged to register early for Orientation as you will be arriving for IFS four weeks ahead of the start of the fall semester. Use this link to register for Orientation online: http://www.indiana.edu/~orient/.

How early before the seminar can I move into my summer room?

The move-in date is Saturday, August 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This should give you plenty of time to move in and get settled before your course starts on Monday morning. Due to flight and travel timelines, international students should e-mail our office at ifs@indiana.edu to coordinate arrival dates and times.

top
Why is the program so early? I will leave for college way before any of my friends.

One of the strengths of the IFS program is the continuity between IFS and the fall semester. Spending three weeks in August here on the IU campus helps you get a great head start on your college life. It would be great to be able to bring all of your friends with you to IFS, but remember, you will begin to make new friends and develop new relationships during these three weeks.

When/How will I find out my roommate information?

For IFS, you will receive your roommate information at check-in on Saturday, August 1. It is likely that you will meet your roommate as you are both unpacking your belongings and setting up your room. Keep in mind that IFS is only three weeks and duplicate items can simply be stored in your room until you move to your fall assignment.

top
Can I request a roommate?

We assign roommates in a way that maximizes the connection between the residence hall and your seminar. Your roommate will be someone from your class, and assigned randomly by gender. If you and a friend are taking the same course, it may be possible to accommodate a request by contacting us at ifs@indiana.edu.

What exactly do I need to bring with me to IFS?

We cover this topic in the information we send to you in June. However, we encourage you to bring only what you need for the three weeks. For general guidelines about what to bring, check out the following link: http://www.rps.indiana.edu/MIG-thingstobring.cfml.

top
When is check-out?

Check out will begin Friday, August 21, at the conclusion of your seminar. Moving vans will be provided to haul your items to your new fall residence center on Saturday morning. All students must be moved when assigned; specific information about this process will be provided to you in the June mailer.

Can I purchase my textbooks before I get there?

By special arrangement with the IU Bookstore, your IFS course texts will be pre-bagged and held for you until check-in. These books will be available in the IU Bookstore at Eigenmann Hall. If you have a circumstance that requires your receipt of books earlier, call our office at 1-800-255-7943 to make those arrangements.

How will I be billed for IFS?

A $125 nonrefundable program fee is required to reserve your space in IFS. This fee will be charged to your Indiana University bursar account in addition to your tuition, fees, housing, and other charges. Should you decide to cancel your enrollment in the program for any reason you will still be responsible to pay the $125 program fee. The IU bursar bill is generated electronically and made available on the web. You will be sent an e-mail notification to your IU (indiana.edu) e-mail account when your statement is ready. For more detailed information on this process, please visit the QuikPAY® link. For more information on available payment options for your University bursar bill, click here. If you need to withdraw from IFS before the program begins, all monies paid minus the nonrefundable program fee will be refunded. If you withdraw after IFS begins but within the first four days of class, a pro-rated amount for both tuition and room and board will be refunded.

top
Would you recommend a certain course over another?

All of our classes are taught by some of IU's best faculty. Please make course selections based on interest in the topic. Each course has a strong academic component and is taught in an intensive format. Your academic advisor will be able to help you determine where your seminar course fits into your individual major.

top
Can I work and still attend IFS?

We DO NOT encourage this. Several professors hold afternoon and evening discussions sessions as well as require film viewing. Each class meets three hours daily, and homework, social events, and getting to know IU will keep you busy. We would encourage you to embrace the IFS experience in its entirety, free from the restrictions of juggling a summer work schedule.

top
What about financial aid for the summer?

A limited number of need-based grants are available to IFS students. You must have submitted the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the Office of Student Financial Assistance to be considered. To be considered for an IFS scholarship, please be sure to check the financial assistance box on the IFS registration form. You will be contacted if you qualify for IFS program grants.

top
Is my meal plan included? Since I paid for it in my bill how do I use it?

Your meal plan is included in the room and board portion of your bill. The amount applied to your meal plan will be added prior to the start of IFS. Your student id card is also your meal card. When you visit the dining hall you simply need to have your student id card scanned and the amount will be deducted from your total. Food costs represent a meal plan that would accommodate the eating habits of a typical IFS student.

top
Can I talk to a professor before I sign up?

We encourage you to contact your professor by e-mail at the address indicated on the course description page.

top
Can I have visitors during the program?

You are welcome to have visitors during the program. However, no guests of the opposite sex are allowed to stay overnight in your room. We only ask that you be courteous of your roommate when you have visitors. It is, after all, their home too.

If I stay on campus once the IFS Program is over, where will I live and will anyone else be here? Where can I eat for those four days?

Many students stay on campus between the IFS and the beginning of Welcome Week. This option is available to all IFS students. If you choose to stay on campus before Welcome Week, you will stay in your fall residence hall room. Residential Programs and Services charges about $25.00 per day for students who stay during the five days between IFS and Welcome Week (totalling $125.00); there is no charge to simply move your belongings to your fall room. Over half of the IFS students usually stay on campus during this time-you will have plenty of company. IU Halls of Residence maintains some dining services during this time. Although your IFS meal plan expires at the end of the three-week program, you are welcome to use the available dining hall and purchase meals as you need.

top
How much storage space is available?

Because we are located in a residence hall, our storage space is limited. If you need to store more than will fit in your room, please contact our office.

top
What if I can't come until late Saturday or Sunday?

If you cannot arrive during the IFS check-in hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, August 1), let us know before hand. We will work with your Resident Assistant and Teaching Intern to ensure that you are taken care of upon your arrival.

top
How much money should I bring?

It is impossible for us to give you a dollar amount, but consider bringing about one fifth what you plan to bring during the fall semester. This is equivalent in comparison to the amount of time you will be spending for the fall semester.

top
How do I change my seminar choice?

To change your seminar selection, call the IFS office at 1-800-255-7943 or 812-855-3839. For verification, you will be asked your full name, birthday, and University Identification Number.

top
How do I withdraw from the IFS program?

To withdraw from either the IFS program you must email us at ifs@indiana.edu. You will need to include your full name, birthday, and University Identification Number. Once you have been withdrawn from the program you will receive a confirmation email to the email address you provided on your original application. Should you have any questions regarding this process please feel free to call the IFS office at 1-800-255-7943 or 812-855-3839.

top
What if I withdraw? Can I get any of my money back?

If for some reason you need to withdraw from the IFS program, it is preferable that you notify us before classes begin. If you were to withdraw once classes have begun, you may be entitled to a refund of your fees and tuition based on a formula used by the Office of the Bursar. Your housing charges will be assessed based on your withdrawal date. The $125 program fee is NON-REFUNDABLE. All standard University office procedures apply to IFS withdrawals per the individual offices policy.

top
Is there damage to my GPA if I withdraw from IFS?

If you withdraw within the first week of IFS, your GPA will never reflect that you were enrolled in the course. After the first week however, it will be up to the discretion of the professor.
