Course Instructor: Bret Rothstein

Bret teaches classes on paintings, prints, films, puzzles, and other toys. He is also the Director of Undergraduate Studies for Art History. An avid time-waster, he has long been interested in useless objects and the sorts of knowledge they produce. (Wordsworth would have called him a "half-and-half idler.") His research program began with religious paintings of the fifteenth century, but it has since branched out into other topics, including most recently constructions of race in American puzzles of the later nineteenth century. He prefers fixed-axle wooden yoyos to aluminum ones, though it's hard to deny the appeal of a finely-turned 65g throw spinning on a concave bearing.
