This course explores the joyful, critical and learning possibilities in the study of multicultural picture books. Our main inquiry is to understand how from childhood to adulthood, human beings are socialized into particular literacy narratives that form our views of the world and what constitutes a legitimate reading experience. We will use picture books to trace our life journeys as readers and writers in a culturally diverse society. The focus will be on critically engaging with picture books as mirrors into our lives, as windows into the lives of others and as points of departure to creatively explore and learn about current social issues in the world.
