Community Builders
Have you ever wondered why someone is involved with the criminal justice system? How did they get there? What barriers exist to escaping the criminal justice system? Where do we disrupt these injustices? You will gain first-hand experience in viewing these challenges through the eyes of those with lived experiences, and participate in activities that provide support through local agencies. To achieve these opportunities, students learn and understand policies and practices that perpetuate oppression. Policies and practices that can change injustices, improve outcomes, and reduce stigma will also be addressed. Students will learn from leading professionals about the unmet needs for re-entry, rehabilitation, and prevention. Class time will be spent in lectures, discussions, examining digital materials, and participating in activities and field trips to provide support to people who are struggling locally. This is an engaging and lively course that will spark critical thinking and fuel creativity.
Social & Criminal Injustice will appeal to students who are motivated to learn how social injustice leads to criminal injustice, and the barriers that are in place to prevent progressing in a different direction. Students will increase critical thinking skills regarding oppressive systems. This course will use a lens of care in our community, demonstrating how important students are to making a difference locally and enhance their employability post-college, regardless of intended major.
This course is eligible for honors credit through the Hutton Honors College.
