How do we perceive the world through the fusion of sound and visual art? What insights do the interplay of auditory and visual mediums provide in understanding our environment? How do we translate these sensory experiences into artistic creations?
Art & Soundscapes: Collective Senses introduces first-year students to the interdisciplinary world of visual and auditory arts, focusing on how these forms can be integrated to create a multi-sensory experience. Students will learn to observe and interpret their surroundings, not just visually but also through the nuanced layers of sound. The seminar will guide them in translating these perceptions into artistic expressions, challenging them to think beyond traditional forms of art.
Our exploration begins with a focus on auditory skills, where students engage in soundwalks around the IU Bloomington campus or local community. This exercise sharpens their ability to capture and analyze ambient sounds, forming the basis for their soundscape albums. They will then apply these auditory experiences to visual mediums, experimenting with techniques in printmaking, digital collage, and sculpture. Lectures, readings, and discussions will build students' understanding of the interplay between sound and visual arts.
Students will explore concepts such as the role of environment in auditory perception, the translation of sound into visual forms, and the broader cultural and educational implications of their sound arts. By the end of the seminar, students will not only have developed a unique set of skills in visual and auditory arts but also an in-depth understanding of the history and theory of sound art. This knowledge will enrich their understanding of how these arts can be combined to create innovative, multi-sensory experiences. Equipped with both practical skills and theoretical insights, students will leave the course ready to continue exploring this exciting interdisciplinary field.
This course is eligible for honors credit through Hutton Honors College.
