Exploring "Otherness"
Reserved for 21st Century Scholars
Carissa Carman
Eskenazi School of Art + Architecture + Design
This class will curate an exhibition that pairs contemporary art works with collection objects, to make an argument in space. Exploring Otherness allows students to research and advocate for works that expand their world view, taking a risk to understand underrepresented identities. The Social Fabric of Collections will introduce students to collection objects that when paired with contemporary artworks become ARTX, art that breaks barriers. Integrated Studio is understanding the process and ideation of how artworks are made.
Have you seen an artwork that you don’t understand? Have you seen an artifact in a museum that you didn’t realize tells the story of how class systems were identified? Students will investigate a wide range of artworks that consider dynamic topics of healing, protest, religion, ecology, magic, expedition or performance garments. Pairing artwork with collection objects allows innovation in creative thinking and the ability to forge new histories and advocacy for the cultural importance of creative artworks. Numerous opportunities to use campus collections and non-conventional thinking will be encouraged.
This course is eligible for honors credit through Hutton Honors College.
